I AM A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVOR
My name is A'Keta Vasser and I am a SURVIVOR of domestic violence. When I was in my early 20s I was in a relationship with someone who said they loved me and I really did believe him until one day he fought {yes I said fought} me because I said something smart to him. I can't remember much from the altercation except me begging for him to stop and once he did he quickly began to apologize and beg for my forgiveness. Yes.....I forgave him and a few months later he did the exact same thing. I am able to tell my story today because I finally got enough strength to walk away.
I hid this ugly secret for years only telling a few people because I was ashamed not that it happened to me but because I continued to stay after it happened. I have always thought of myself as strong but the fact that I stayed was and continues to be my biggest regret in life.
Over the years I have cried and prayed a lot about my abuse and to be honest I am still healing from it but I know that GOD is working everything out for my good. So today I am coming from behind the shadows of embarrassment because I want to help the next victim know that the abuse was not your fault and if you are in an abusive relationship you can and should walk away! I DID!
Isaiah 61:3 To all who mourn in Israel, HE will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for HIS own glory.
